QRNational Coal is Australia’s premier coal transport company and a world leader in heavy haul, narrow gauge railway technology. We operate over 550 services each week in Queensland and New South Wales, transporting coal from 56 mines to eight export coal terminals and eight domestic customers. In 2007–08 we hauled more than 184 million tonnes of coal in Queensland and New South Wales. 

Our electric locomotives service the two largest Queensland coal rail systems – Goonyella and Blackwater – while QRNational Coal diesel electric locomotives operate in the Newlands, Blackwater, Moura, West Moreton and Hunter Valley systems.

Our fleet is valued at over $2.9 billion, but as demand for coal continues to escalate, we continue to grow to meet our customers’ needs. We have invested over $2 billion in new rollingstock and supportive infrastructure which will enable us to lift our capacity to over 240 million tonnes per annum by 2011.

As well as getting bigger, we’re also working smarter, reviewing the allocation of locomotives and wagons to maximise rollingstock utilisation. We are also working closely with customers to maximise the entire coal chain’s export capacity.

This ongoing commitment to consultation, growth and improvement, along with the quality of QRNational Coal’s assets and the depth of its capacity, has us well-placed to remain the coal mining industry’s best option for converting mined coal into delivered coal.
