QR’s bulk freight business, ARG, is Australia’s leading bulk freight specialist, servicing primary industries and the mining sectors.
It was formed by the merger of QR’s own bulk freight business in Queensland and the ARG business in Western Australia, South Australia and New South Wales.
It now operates as ARG Bulk East and ARG Bulk West and has nationally15 depots nationally, across a 14,000 kilometre network. All up, the business carried over 56 million tonnes of bulk freight in 2008/09.
ARG Bulk West is the biggest iron ore haulier outside the Pilbara region and this is continuing to grow. It also manages BHP Billiton Nickel West’s supply chain in Western Australia, and the Mount Isa to Townsville rail corridor in Queensland. ARG Bulk East recently signed a new agreement to transport up to 280,000 tonnes of bulk export raw sugar from Prosperpine to Mackay.
ARG’s freight also includes alumina, concentrates, mineral sands, grain, fuel, chemicals and many other commodities.
All the commodities have different requirements, so ARG works directly with its customers to provide the best possible solutions. Because it operates the terminals as well as the trains, it can also provide better value and more integration.
